This is an experiential, interactive sound installation that aims to look at the gap between sound expressions that are heard but not written in letterforms. This concept is called Onomatopoeia, which is the process of creating a word that phonetically imitates, resembles, or suggests the sound that it describes.
Adding the technology variable as a lens to look in the future of those sound expressions and if humans can manipulate the limitations and ability of machines to imitate the sound that is produced by humans in the first place. Taking the zaghruta or the lululation as a case study to emphasise the gap between analogue vs digital sounds.
This installation features various zaghrit collected from different parts of Egypt, Sudan, Syria and Lebanon from males and females, through an online open call.
Zaghruta is a collective female sound expression/statement, done in mostly celebratory occasions such as weddings, graduation ceremonies and even sometimes in funerals as a sign of celebration.
